I just wanted to say how
impressed I am at the level of personal service and knowledge you
provided me with. It is rare to find an individual so willing
to go to such extents to make sure a customer is provided with the
knowledge they need to have full satisfaction with their purchase.
I commend you on your
commitment, and your company for hiring you.
Thank you for all your help. It was very
much appreciated in the setup of my new mattress.
I will do business with your firm again. I am
sleeping well and enjoying my new airbed, thanks to you.
Have a great day, Roland.

Aloha,
Just thought I would let you
know we are Hawaii residents and sleeping on air. The Egret is
absolutely everything we could ask for and more. I believe our next
door neighbors will be purchasing one soon. Two minutes on ours was
enough to make them believers. Thanks again for all my restful
nights sleep.

Hello,
Thanks for all your help with
our mattress. I was in the process of filling it when you called.
You were right; after three days the fiber expanded and the mattress
is great!! I'm so happy to have found you on the net. You provided
better service, three time zones away, than I have received down the
street.
Have a great
day.

About 45 minutes after I emailed today the order showed up at

Hi, Roland,
Just letting you know that we are
extremely satisfied with our new water bed. We have been using
it for about three weeks.
My husband has back
problems, which have more or less resolved now that we are back on a
water bed.
Thank you for all your help with our little hiccup
with the installation instructions.

Hello:
I enjoyed the article about your store in
the New York Times. Been
sleeping on a waterbed for 25 years, and dread the nights spent on
the road in hotel rooms, where I am forced to try to get
comfortable on an innerspring. It's good to know that when
it's time to replace the matress we have now, there will be at least
one store in the country that we can rely on to have what we're
looking for.
And, what the hell, it's still
groovy.

It is just way too
comfortable!
Thank you for recommending
and selling us our new bed. We absolutely love it . . . and I didn't
even put in the foam eggcrate. Nor the fleece underpad that we used
to use. Maybe later, but right now it feels like sleeping on a
cloud.
Thanks for the great
service!

Hi,
Just wanted you to know I
received our bed the next day. What a blessing, you are wonderful to
do business with. It is nice to find someone who is willing to help
you after you sign the credit card slip. I want to thank you again
and tell you how much we appreciate your concern for us and our
satisfaction.. P.S. All our friends and family have been checking
it out so don't be surprised if you get a few more
orders..
Thanks

Hello,
A few weeks ago we bought a
Thermoshield insulating cover at your store, and you asked for our
feedback. Well, we are completely satisfied with the cover! The
waterbed has been unplugged since that day, and we're saving a bit
on our rising electricity bill. We will recommend this to
others.
Thank you very much for the
suggestion...

Dear
Roland,
I read about your store
in my local paper today, The Orange County
Register.
I bought my first
"used" water bed in the early 1970's. It was a frame, a liner,
a heater, and a bag that I filled with water. I lived in an
apartment at the time and I was in love with my
bed.
I moved the bed to my
town home in 1976. Have gone through two or three mattresses
and now I have one of the "waveless" mattresses in that it has
baffles inside but you still fill it completely with water and I
have a heater and a liner. The mattress was around $300 as I
remember but I would never, ever go back to a regular bed - I figure
I have been sleeping on a waterbed for over 32 years now.
If and when I have to
be moved to a retirement home (many many years from now) my bed goes
with me or I am not moving!

Hi,
I was in the other day getting
H20 conditioner for our waterbed we purchased from you about a year
ago out here in Benicia. We checked out your web site. You did a
fantastic job. As I said the other day, buying the waterbed from you
was the BEST investment we have ever made.
Happy New

Hello:
I enjoyed the article in this
mornings San
Francisco Chronicle paper and bookmarked your web address.
My daughter won't sleep on anything else, having a waterbed as
a baby, she is now in college and we will both be moving to
Baltimore next year. Hopefully you will still be in business
so we can order a new waterbed at that time. hers is so old,
and we have been unable to find a replacement. If it will hold
out until she graduates we will be happy.

Hello Roland,
I was so astonished and excited
when I read about your store and passion for waterbeds in the
Saturday Home and Garden section of the Contra
Costa Times. My wife, Darlis, and I feel that same passion
that there is nothing better to sleep on than a waterbed.
Our bed is a California King
Size as I am 6'6 and this bed was the only one I ever found to
accommadate my size. I am so glad you are located near us.
Looking forward to coming into your store for a
visit.

Roland,Hi!,
We received our airframe mattress
and our thermoshield a few weeks ago, and I wanted to tell you
how much we love it! I have been sleeping so much better
now, I love the air frame it is so nice, and we love the
thermoshield, we don't need a heater at all with it. We live in
an area that never really gets cold or hot and I am glad to not have
to worry about using a heater Well I just wanted to let
you know how much we love our bed.

I just wanted to let you
know that we received and installed our new waterbed mattress.

impressed with the Air Frame...It is very comfy...Several friends

direction!

Read an article about you and your business from the NYTimes News Service. Delighted to learn about
your history and dedication to the value of waterbeds. I've
used several over the past twenty five years, installing the latest
replacement just this past summer. I put the old one out in
the backyard, patched it and it made a great play surface for me and
my three year old great granddaughter. Her eyes got big when I
told her she could do anything she wanted out there, breaking all
the rules for the inside bed. I firmly believe my back-to-the-womb
sleeping accommodations have made me a healthier person, emotionally
and physically, through the years - I'll be 71 in a couple of weeks.
I love the movement, the winter warmth, the simplicity of it.
I use a Woolrest cover under the sheet to keep my distance from the
plastic, and that adds to my comfort. My husband, now gone,
wasn't quite so sold on it as I've always been, but he had a bad
back and always wondered if he'd do better on a firm support.
I've read recently that research suggests the conforming surface is
actually better for stressed spines. Thanks for your
dedication.
Keep the faith!

Hi Roland,
Just wanted to thank you for answering ALL
of
my many, many questions regarding trying to find
the exact waterbed mattress like we had before we
lost it back in l998 due to water damage we had in
our house. A year ago I asked you a ton of
questions,
and then about a month ago I asked more. You were
always wonderful in getting back to me quickly with your
many
helpful answers and I just wanted to say thank you and
tell you I really appreciated all the help.
I wish I had discovered your website sooner.
Anyway, we are in "guarded" high
hopes that this just might be THE ONE we are looking
for. The
one we are looking for, we called our miracle bed,
because it
totally took care of all my back pain, no other
mattress like it.
I will let you know.
Thank you again!!! How much longer do
you think you
will sell waterbeds??? Hopefully forever!

Awesome, Roland!
Thank you so much for keeping me informed! Both of
my childen had this type of crib mattress - the one I ordered
today is for my first grandchild! Best thing I could have
done for my children - and for myself; they slept through the
night from the first time they slept in their crib. Thank
you for keeping these mattresses available - and affordable!
Bless you and yours now and throughout the new year!

Hi Roland,
Just read the
article about you and your waterbed life story and just had to write
and tell you, I can tell you the almost exact same story. I saw the
article in the Orange County Register
where my ex Mike now has only one store left in Fullerton. He
started business back in 1973 in the Orange Circle. That's because
he had a bean bag mfg/dry cleaner/head shop. He lived in this store
and slept on a waterbed and customers became interested and wha laa.
In 1984 I joined him and we lived the next 15 yrs selling waterbeds
in a chain of 5 stores in the LA, OC areas. Our daughter (now 14)
also came from that nice warm womb right into a little crib size
flotation system. We were the regular old Mom & Pop waterbed
business. Over the years we also got down to one store. In 1997 Mike
and I seperated but still remain very good friends and still sleep
on a waterbed. I found your story sweet and wanted to share mine
with you.

Hello Mr. Formica
I just read an
article about you and your store in the New York
Times article and I just
had to write to you. I bought my first waterbed when I was 30
(18 years ago) after my divorce much to my parents protest that "You
don't need something that silly". My closest friends and
family have been telling me for years "to get rid of that stupid
waterbed" "it is too hard to move and put together and you don't
need it" "Get a regular bed" Well I stay firm and defend
my bed! I love my waterbed and even at 46 will not give up my
comfort. I plan to show your article to them all and say
"HA"! (I just moved to a new house 2 months ago and I am still
hearing "get rid of that thing" from all who helped me move).
I also bought my son a water bed when he was five and he still
sleeps on one too. I enjoyed browsing your web site and will
visit it again. Thanks for the enjoyable article and web
site.

Thanks, I know I
will be happy. I am using my original mattress that is at least
20 years old, never leaked but does have a stand up liner. My
mattress is starting to harden and is getting discolored so I am
glad it gave me a warning to replace it. After searching the
Internet the mattress I ordered from you seems to be the
best quality I could find. The local waterbed stores are getting
fewer all the time and didn't have anything close to the
quality of your mattress. I do use the conditioner but after 20
plus years it doesn't owe me
anything. I
could really sell waterbeds because 20 years ago it cured my back
problems when nothing else would. It only took a few
days.

Waterbeds: The next big
wave? By
Allen
Salkin
8-14-03
RICHMOND - Roland Formica is
a lonely soldier. His beard has whitened during his long
battle. Allies have surrendered to his shrewd enemy.
Negative propaganda has assaulted him. But the last real
waterbed salesman in the Bay Area stands his ground,
powerfully worded full-color brochures holstered at the
ready.
"I won't have a conventional
mattress in here," Formica, 55, said, his feet in
thick-sole black leather shoes planted amid 16 waterbeds
at his shop, Odds 'N' Ends Waterbeds. "In the beginning,
all of us waterbed guys looked at it like a war on the
innerspring. We called them "dead beds."
Odds 'N' Ends, which opened in 1969
and which Formica claims is the oldest waterbed store in
the world, used to be one of more than 20 such shops in
the Bay Area, the birthplace of the water bed. One by
one, competitors have closed or added so many "dead
beds" -- futons, air mattresses and regular furniture --
that they are by rights no longer waterbed
shops.
Formica, who decided 34 years ago he
could change the world by selling waterbeds and has
never wavered, stores decades' worth of catalogs and
design magazines in a back room and keeps discontinued
stock in a warehouse. "I had a guy come in last week
looking for a Liberty heating pad," he said. "Liberty
went out of business 20 years ago, and no other pad will
work with it. I had one new in the box." He smiled, two
decades of storage justified.
It has been a long and wavy road for
Formica and the waterbed. Almost immediately after the
bed's invention in 1967 by a San Francisco State
graduate student in design named Charles Hall, it was
seized on by the counterculture as an alternative to Mom
and Dad's bed.
Originally consisting of a
water-filled vinyl mattress held in a wood frame, the
undulating blob was inarguably sexier-looking than a
conventional sleeping surface. Medical experts
pronounced it healthier because it conformed to the
body's curves. Anyone could see that the bed, which Hall
originally called "the pleasure pit," was just plain
groovy.
"There were always hippie chicks
coming in from out of state, from back East," said
Formica, who was 21 when he opened Odds 'N' Ends. "And
if you had a waterbed, you were going to get lucky.
You'd be on this thing with two or three people, with
trippy lights and cool music and the thing going up and
down."
By the late 1970s, business was
booming and Formica was a young father. "I started all
of my kids on crib-size water beds," he said. "They came
out of the womb where they were supported by water and
right onto water."
Waterbed sales grew nationally until
the mid-'80s, reaching a peak of $1.5 billion to $2
billion in 1987 and accounting for 22 percent of the
American mattress industry, according to the Specialty
Sleep Association, a trade group. At Formica's peak in
the mid-'80s, he had three stores, a waterbed
manufacturing plant and 13 employees.
Then the market crashed for a
variety of reasons, including bad publicity, poor
quality control and changing tastes. Sales slipped in
2001 to $456 million, 6 percent of the mattress
industry. Today Formica is down to one store, and he is
the only employee.
"Roland is a die-hard," said Hall,
60, who now makes high-tech inflatable kayaks in
Martinez. "That's how it used to be. Real waterbed shops
wouldn't have an innerspring in them."
Hall contends that waterbeds are
best sold in specialty shops where knowledgeable
salespeople can answer the inevitable waterbed
questions.
"You field stuff about 'Is it going
to fall through my floor? Will I get seasick? Will it
leak?'" he said. The answers: No; no; and not unless you
stab it with a long sharp knife.
When a couple in their 50s, both
doctors, entered Odds 'N' Ends on a recent afternoon,
Formica was ready to tell them all the good reasons to
buy a waterbed. "With these beds, you have no pressure
points on your body," he said. "You may just wake up in
exactly the same position in which you fell asleep,
never moving once all night."
"When you get in," he added, "it's
warm and your muscles relax immediately and you go right
to sleep."
Also: "This will outlast a regular
bed 2 to 1 and will sleep the same tonight as it will 10
years from now."
The customers, Linda and Barry
Engelstad, had pretty much made up their minds before
entering the shop that they wanted a water bed. Linda
Engelstad, an internal medicine specialist at Highland
Hospital in Oakland, said she has slept on one since she
sold waterbeds at a now-defunct shop in El Sobrante
while she was a pre-med student.
Formica wrote up their order, $859
for a California-king-size model and foundation. "It's
not like we haven't moved ahead with our lives since the
'60s and '70s," Linda said. "But this is the one thing
we're hanging on to. In over 30 years, I've never had a
backache."
In the 15 years since waterbed sales
sprang a leak, a few manufacturers have quietly improved
the product, industry experts say. The modern waterbed
is soft-sided and looks exactly like a conventional
mattress. A virtually leak-proof water-filled bladder is
held in a foam case, instead of wood, and a thick pad of
ticking is zipped over it. The mattress can be placed on
any standard platform bed or on top of a box spring, is
nearly waveless, uses standard sheets and, once emptied,
is far easier to move than a coil-filled
mattress.
"The product born in the 1960s was
not a mature product," said Dennis Boyd, president of
the Specialty Sleep Association and owner of Boyd
Specialty Sleep in St. Louis. "Now what I see every day
in my own store is twentysomethings who are very, very
interested in the product and don't have any
preconceptions of the product coming from the '60s or
'70s."
There are signs that the waterbed,
unfashionable for a decade and a half, may be on the
verge of making a comeback. Sales in Europe, Germany in
particular, have surged in recent years, from virtually
zero in 1990 to 220,000 units last year, Boyd said.
Waterbeds may be acquiring a patina of hipness, as all
things '70s and '80s reappear for another lap around the
pop-culture track. The rooftop bar and pool at the
Downtown Standard hotel in Los Angeles features three
red plastic pods, each with a vibrating water bed. The
wavy beds are full nearly every night with groups of
giggling bar patrons.
"They have turned out to be very
popular," Andre Balazs, owner of the trendy year-old
hotel, said. "Waterbeds haven't been seen in a while,
but suddenly there it is and it's vaguely
familiar."
In Formica's heyday, he sold 100 to
150 beds a month from his three stores. These days, he
moves 50 to 75, half sold through a Web site, www.americasbestsleep.com. He still carries a few old-style waterbeds.
The Hampton has both a fold-out champagne tray and a
velvet-lined jewelry-safe box in the padded
headboard.
Just before closing on a recent
Wednesday, Carmen Hollingquest, a 26-year-old secretary
at San Quentin prison, came in to shop for a waterbed to
replace one she bought in 1997 that had been damaged in
a break-in. She first became interested in waterbeds
because of their "freakiness," she said, but now likes
them because of how well she sleeps. "People always say
it's from the '70s," she said, but that does not faze
her. She asked Formica about his layaway plan and
promised to return to make the purchase in a few weeks
when she moves into a new house.
If waterbeds do become popular
again, Formica is ready, and if they do not, he believes
he will have no problem staying in business until
retirement age. He owns the building where his store is
located and still has the expensive toys he bought when
business was booming: a two-carat diamond wedding ring
he moved to his right hand after his divorce, a '57
Chevrolet and a BMW motorcycle he rides on weekends to
his cabin near Yosemite National Park.
"All the other stores have been
weeded out," he said. "I guess I'm the only weed
left." | New York
